Marinsafes' Partner WECOS has been granted USCG type approval for its Blue Ocean Shield Ballast Water treatment system

Marinesafes' Partner China’s COSCO shipbuilding group - COSCO Weihai Shipbuilding Marine Technology Co., Ltd (WECOSCO Technology), has been granted USCG type-approval for its Blue Ocean Shield system, who become one of the 18 manufacturers globally who has obtained USCG type approval for ballast water treatment systems.

The application for type approval was granted earlier in 2019. Blue Ocean Shield is described as a mechanical filter, medium-pressure UV disinfection system comprising:

  • Filter Unit: negative-pressure suction self-cleaning filter, removes organisms and particles greater than 50μm.
  • UV Unit: medium-pressure disinfection technology effectively inactivates aquatic nuisance species and pathogens.
  • Control Unit: one-touch operation; automatic operation, control and monitor.

When ballasting, Blue Ocean Shield removes sediments and micro-organisms greater than 50μm. Ballast water then enters the UV reactor, an appropriate dose of UV ray is generated to inactivate the organisms, such as algae and bacteria, in the water. Once treated, the ballast water arrives in the ballast tank.

When de-ballasting, the filter is automatically bypassed, the ballast water goes directly through the UV unit and receives a second UV treatment, ensuring discharged water in compliance with the convention and USCG’s requirements.

Blue Ocean Shield BWMS is available in seven base models with flow rates ranging from 100 m3 to 1,200 m3. Combining base models into sets gives flow rates in excess of 4,000 m3.

Marinesafes work closely with WECOS to offer ballast water treatment system to our customers in marine and offshore markets.
